Site Suitability Analysis of Solid Waste Disposal in Ilesa, Nigeria

This paper reveals site suitability analysis for solid waste disposal in Ilesa town of Osun State, Nigeria; with a view to recommending the best locations management town. In survey process, using multi-stage sampling technique, research made use 563 copies structured questionnaire, which were administered households selected quarters Ilesa. Geographical Information System (GIS) and Remote Sensing (RS) techniques equally involved existing sites determination proposed/suitable dumping. Among other findings, household-heads complained various forms air pollution emanating from minor dumpsites proximal their homes, offensive odour being predominant pollution. Also, dumpsite (the major town) is located along Ilesa-Ife expressway at outskirts operated as an open rather than composting, sanitary land fill, incineration or recycling system. Relating this, it was discovered that certain residential buildings within 500 metres radius dumpsite, found inappropriate, 2006 Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) landfill standard ‘moderately’ suitable site. recommends minimum distance 250 water provision setback trunk road respectively.
